Psychedelic Medicine - Hacking Psychiatry?! (Video)

Psychedelic Therapy as a fundamentally new approach to mental health issues Psychedelic research constitutes a challenge to the current paradigm of mental healthcare. But what makes it so different? And will it be able to meet the high expectations it is facing? This talk will provide a concise answer. Psychedelic Therapy is evolving to be a game changer in mental healthcare. Where classical antidepressants and therapies e.g. for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder often have failed to provide relief, substance assisted psychotherapies with Psilocybin, LSD and MDMA show promising results in the ongoing clinical trials worldwide. A challenge to the current paradigm: Unlike the conventional approach of medicating patients with antidepressants and other psychotropic drugs on a daily basis for months and years at a time, Psychedelic Therapy offers single applications of psychedelics or emotionally opening substances such as Psilocybin, LSD and MDMA within the course of a limited number of therapeutic sessions. The clinical trials conducted in this kind of setting are currently designed around depression, substance abuse, anxiety and depression due to life threatening illnesses, PTSD, anorexia and social anxiety in Autism. Though the results look promising, it is important not to take these therapies for a “magic bullet cure” for all and very patient will mental issues. This talk will outline the principles of psychedelic therapy and research and provide a concise overview of what psychedelic therapy can and cannot offer in the future. Andrea Jungaberle

USA. Public Health:Life Expectancy Rose Slightly In 2018, As Drug Overdose Deaths Fell

For the first time since 2014, death rates in the U.S. declined and life expectancy showed a modest uptick, according to new data released in two reports Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Life expectancy at birth in 2018 was 78.7 years, 0.1 year longer than the previous year. (NPR – National Public Radio, 30.01.2020)

USA. Reviewing NIDA’s 2019 Achievements and Looking to the Future

As NIDA sets its sights on new goals and objectives for 2020 and beyond, I like to reflect on how far we have come in our research efforts, especially as they concern the opioid crisis, one of the biggest public health issues of our era. Although deaths from synthetic opioids like fentanyl continue to rise, glimmers of hope are starting to appear. Provisional numbers show that overall overdose deaths have held steady rather than increasing since 2018, and a massive federal investment toward finding scientific solutions to the crisis promises to further turn the tide against opioid and other drug use disorders. DGPPN-Kongress 2019.

Weighing the evidence for spiritual and religious interventions for substance use problems

Spiritual and religious interventions are commonly used to treat substance use disorder, and findings from a number of randomized controlled trials suggest such interventions are effective. And yet it has been over a decade since this evidence has been weighed in a meta-analysis – a statistical approach that can assess findings from multiple studies to determine whether, taken together, they suggest a treatment works. This study brings us up to date with a meta-analysis of spiritual and religious interventions for substance use disorder that includes all randomized controlled trials on this subject from 1990-2018. Afghanistan. Meth boom adds to Afghanistan''s opium and heroin woes

Kabul. At a sprawling rehabilitation centre on the outskirts of Kabul, dozens of dazed-looking drug addicts clamber out of police buses and shuffle toward the facility.

The men, arrested on the streets of the Afghan capital, have been sent to a compulsory detox programme established to tackle an explosion in the use and production of highly addictive methamphetamine.

Almost unheard of in Afghanistan until a few years ago, meth''s sudden appearance has blindsided authorities in a country already suffering from a crisis in opium and heroin addiction. (Outlook, Indian, 19.12.2019)

EMCDDA. EMCDDA pilot study of drug-related homicide in Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden

Summary

This paper is part of the EMCDDA activity around the development and improvement of drug supply indicators, with a focus on drug-related homicide. It builds upon the 2017 review of the academic research and data sources on drug-related homicide at national and European/international levels by providing a common definition of the phenomenon and a detailed set of guidelines for standardised data collection. Importantly, the report also presents a comparative analysis of the results of the pilot collection of DRH data conducted in Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden. (EMCDDA, Lissabon, November 2019)
