SAMHSA. Healthy Starts: Postpartum OUD Care Transitions for Mother and Infant (Case Study)
This publication highlights best practices for managing OUD during and after pregnancy and summarizes current evidence on treating perinatal substance use disorder. It presents an innovative program as a case study and offers practical advice for healthcare providers and care teams on collaborative perinatal care and proven approaches to support recovery, continuity of care, and healthy outcomes for mothers and infants.
The postpartum period is a critical time for connecting mothers and caregivers with services that improve maternal and infant health outcomes for families. The first postpartum year is an especially high-risk period for women with an opioid use disorder (OUD), during which the likelihood of fatal overdose and other preventable deaths increases. Medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and other evidence-based treatments can help reduce these risks. (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), USA, Juni 2026)
