EUDA. Drug production in Afghanistan and the region: new EUDA report highlights value of innovative monitoring and early warning to better inform drug policy
The European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA) has today published a report, Drug production in Afghanistan and the region: innovative monitoring to better inform policy, examining how drug production systems in Afghanistan and neighbouring countries are adapting to political change, enforcement pressure and market demand.
Afghanistan has long been the main source of heroin supplied to Europe. However, the report finds that recent developments, including the Taliban’s ban on drug production and trafficking in 2022, have reshaped, rather than eliminated, drug supply dynamics.
The findings underline the importance of understanding how production systems adapt, relocate and absorb market shocks, helping policymakers anticipate developments before they impact European drug markets. (European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA), Lissabon, 22.10.2026)
