USA. Traveling to the U.S. with Medication - Know Before You Go
All travelers to the United States, whether citizens or visitors, must followU.S. laws regarding prescription and over-the-counter medications regardless of foreign prescriptions. While legal abroad, prescription and over-the-counter medications are subject to confiscation and can result in severe penalties if not approved for use in the U.S. Additional state laws may apply.
You may bring a controlled substance into the U.S. for personal medical use or to administer to an animal that is traveling with you, if the following conditions are met:
- Medication is in its original container
- The medication label includes the drug’s chemical or trade name and schedule symbol.
- If the chemical or trade name does not appear on the label, then the label must include the pharmacy/practitioner information, and a prescription number
- Foreign visitors are allowed to bring up to 50 dosage units of controlled substances into the U.S. for personal use
- Declare all medications to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
