USA. Policies And Programs To Accelerate Declines In U.S. Drug Fatalities
Fatal drug poisonings have recently declined in the United States.
The National Vital Statistic System (NVSS) provides monthly updated data on drug overdose deaths based on records submitted by US jurisdictions. According to provisional data released in March 2025, comparing the number of deaths involving drugs for the year ending October 2024 (84,076) to the year ending October 2023 (112,910) indicates a 25.5% decrease and 28,834 lives saved. During the same time frame, deaths involving synthetic opioids other than methadone declined from 78,606 to 52,385 (a difference of 26,221 lives) indicating that much of the decrease in drug-related mortality is associated with declines in deaths involving synthetic opioids, which includes fentanyl.
