Mexiko. We Were Simply Animals’ - What happens to the disappeared in Mexico’s narco-slavery camps
For the past five years, Marcela Turati, Thelma Gómez Durán and Eliezer Budasoff have been investigating forced labour camps run by drug cartels in the Sierra Tarahumara mountains in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. In a landmark report, they tracked down and interviewed victims of this criminal operation – men who were kidnapped, held in captivity in the mountains, and made to cultivate drugs under extreme conditions, without pay, often for years on end. The existence of these camps is an open secret in Chihuahua, tolerated by the authorities. This is the most detailed portrait to date of life inside Mexico’s expanding narco-slavery system.
