Members of Congress, we urge you to protect these vital substance use and mental health services. Millions of Americans are depending on you.

(…) We are faculty from colleges, universities, and scholarly societies working around the country with a deep understanding of the dire consequences of dismantling the lifesaving work conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and their grant recipients. The goals of the work we do are simple. We work actively to reduce drug- and alcohol-induced deaths and to give the millions of Americans struggling with addiction and mental health conditions access to the vital health and social services that give them and their families hope. To achieve these goals, we partner closely with policymakers, public health officials, service providers, businesses, patients with substance use disorder (SUD) and their families. At a time when the federal government should be boosting investments in behavioral health systems, service delivery, and public health surveillance programs, we are seeing drastic cuts to key agencies, including SAMHSA, the CDC, and HRSA.
